Encounters by the water – from the elegance of the Lake Cinema to the candlelight of Candle Lake
Sitting on the shore of Lake Városliget, it is difficult to imagine that this was once the site of an elegant summer cinema, filled with the scent of roses and accompanied by live music. Yet in 1957—and even as early as 1921—the Lake Cinema was one of Budapest's most exclusive outdoor entertainment venues, where bourgeois elegance and social life came together. Now, in 2025, Candle Lake is reviving the magic of waterside evenings with similar goals, but in a modern guise.
The program series is closely linked to the spirit of the City Park Café, where the past and present have been intertwined since 1895, and where gastronomic excellence, tradition, and a special atmosphere still offer an unmissable experience today.
The heyday of the Tó Cinema
The history of the Lake Cinema began in the summer of 1921, when Lieutenant Colonel József Daróczy received permission to operate a cinema on the lake in front of Vajdahunyad Castle. The special atmosphere of the screenings was created not only by the lake and the summer in the City Park, but also by the sophisticated program, live music, and bourgeois elegance that characterized the venue. At that time, sound films did not yet exist, so viewers could enjoy the performances accompanied by a pianist or a small orchestra.
The cinema was full every evening: initially on weekends, and later almost every evening, with two screenings.
The press of the time wrote enthusiastically about it: "ozone-rich, cool, rose-scented air" and "artistic music" awaited the audience. This was not just a cinema, but a defining meeting place where the city's social life took place in a vibrant, elegant setting.
Az 1957-es újjászületés új technikai szenzációt hozott: bemutatták a kinemaszkópot, vagyis a szélesvásznat. Bár az első vetített film vegyes kritikákat kapott, a Tó-mozi a szezon végére így
is százezer látogatót vonzott.
The Candle Lake Experience
Six and a half decades later, the Candle Lake concert and dinner event offers a similar experience: evenings by the water, a special atmosphere, and lasting memories—only with the visual possibilities of the 21st century. While in 1957 the wide screen was the novelty, today it is the fairytale visuals that captivate guests: the light of hundreds of candles floating on the lake and the reflection of the City Park Lake provide the central magic of the evenings.
During Candle Lake Dinner, guests at Városliget Café were not left out of the experience either: the restaurant's windows offered an unparalleled view of the lights dancing on the water, while the candlelit dinner and delicious dishes made the evening unforgettable – allowing guests to experience both the bourgeois elegance of the past and the culinary delights of the present.
Candle Lake Dinner was more than just a dinner: it was a journey through time, from the elegance of the Lake Cinema to the present day. If you couldn't attend, you can now look back on it in pictures. And if you were there, we hope you have as many unforgettable memories of it as we do.
A timeless tradition, with a new look
Candle Lake Dinner is not just a program, but a magical evening where the light of hundreds of candles provides a fairytale backdrop for moments spent together. The water surface and the lights still evoke the same emotional response as the Lake Cinema once did: they make time stand still and make the evening special.
The history of the Lake Cinema is not merely a curiosity in the history of the city. It shows that people's desires—a special place, shared experiences, the magic of summer evenings—are timeless.
In 1921, 1957, and 2025, we gather by the water for the same reason: to experience something truly unique together. The Candle Lake concert and dinner evening, in collaboration with the City Park Café, continues this tradition – in a way that remains exciting and unforgettable for today's audience.
During the Lake Cinema era, the scent of roses and the big screen were what made it special. Today, it is the candlelight, the atmosphere, and the gastronomic experience that make evenings by the water so memorable. One thing, however, has not changed: the magic of City Park Lake is eternal.
